Featured Program

The Reach Out Team is now
The Spiritual Social Action Program

The Aim of the Spiritual Social Action Program is:“To engage the congregation in connecting with members of the community through events and projects to assist those in need, and to offer opportunities for spiritual growth.”

We are here to reach out to others. Donating to one of our projects, volunteering at one of our events, joining our team to be part of the planning are all ways to be included. You’re welcome to attend the Spiritual Social Action Program meetings. See Head’s Up for current times and events.

The Spiritual Social Action Program selects special service projects open to the entire congregation throughout the year. Other projects are active on an ongoing basis. We attempt to balance efforts between local, national and international areas, age specific areas, gender areas, traditional projects and exploring new avenues. We try to support organizations with a structure in place to preclude starting from scratch and to better utilize our resources.

Pantry Donations

Nonperishable food, paper products, cleaning supplies and personal care items are collected in the wire baskets in the café for the use of clients at Holy Family Church Door Ministry and the Siena/Francis House Homeless Shelter. Your donations are always appreciated.

Monthly Prayer Service

A monthly worship celebration and prayer service is provided to residents of the Douglas County Health Center. People willing to participate with music, readings, and socializing with the residents are encouraged to contact Charlotte Renze.

Pottowattamie Jail Ministry

Classes teaching women positive ideas for living a healthy, happy, fulfilled life are provided weekly on Saturdays from 1-3 pm. Contact Rae Williams

Loving Actions

Loving Actions is a “gentle” reminder for adults to reach out to their family and/or community...an action that can be practiced all month and implemented forever. For the latest, read the Head’s Up and the signs posted in the café. See Sharon Schwab in the bookstore to share your ideas.

Habitat for Humanity

This portion of the Spiritual Social Action Programworks with Habitat’s Multi-Faith Coalition to renovate, rehabilitate, or recycle a home for a deserving family. Our efforts take 6-12 weeks every summer. The coalition provides physical labor and financial support, giving the Habitat family a leg up into home ownership. With the Multi-Faith Coalition covering these expenses, Habitat for Humanity provides the family with an affordable low interest loan making their dream of home ownership possible. This year, Kyle Pearson will be heading up a team for Unity and encourages everyone to participate. If you can’t swing a hammer, he’ll teach you! Or, the workers are always hungry, so food is a welcome sight if construction is not for you.

Periodic projects

These usually take place on a quarterly basis, often times coinciding with the holidays. Examples of past endeavors follow. Everybody is encouraged to participate whether you’re a team member or not

Unity’s collections of money, food, clothing, toys, blankets, school supplies, stuffed animals and personal care items have benefited numerous agencies with whom we coordinate. We’ve supported NE Aids Project, Salvation Army, Siena/Francis House Homeless Shelter, Holy Family Church Door Ministry, Sorenson Residential and Assisted Living Facility, Douglas County Health Center, Mission for All Nations, Samaritan’s Purse, Mystic Fest, Mozambique orphans and St. Joseph nursing home. Gail Gossman or Sandi Jenkins are good ones to call with questions since they’ve worked on many of these events.
