Youth and Family Ministries Director

Position Description 
Position to be filled by January 2010

Title: Youth and Family Ministries Director

Accountable to: Minister and General Church Circle

Purpose: To develop and manage a Unity Church of Omaha family program that effectively addresses the spiritual education needs of UCO youth ages birth through high school.   To provide a safe and nurturing environment for the spiritual growth of youth and adults involved in the program. The Youth and Family Ministries Director will work with the Minister(s), the General Church Circle and UCO families regarding programs, budget, space, and planning for the Youth and Families Program.

 

Accountabilities:

  • Organizing and managing a spiritual education program that meets the needs of youth ranging in age birth to high school graduation.   Developing materials that provide information to families and others about the program. 
  • Recruiting, training, supporting and evaluating volunteers as teachers, sponsors and assistants in the classrooms and volunteers in the Nursery. Develop orientation, training and ongoing education to support the volunteers’ growth. Process applications, verify references, complete background checks, assess and monitor new volunteers.
  • Serving as the Rep Link to the Youth and Families Ministry Team on the General Church Circle and attending all G.C.C. meetings.
  • Maintaining a data base of youth participants that document any special needs, contact information, family relationships and other vital information needed to insure the safety and well being of each child.
  • Scheduling volunteers and assistants in the classrooms for each Sunday. Maintaining a database for all volunteers, post calendars verify schedules and assess teacher/child ratios in classrooms.
  • Assessing age-appropriate curriculum for all classrooms using current topics, media and available technology. Director provides or purchases curriculum and oversees curriculum development for all age groups.  
  • Maintaining supplies for classroom activities and special projects. Purchase needed supplies, maintaining an accounting of all petty cash amounts and all budget expenditures.
  • Managing a child care program that meets the needs of children of parents attending adult functions at the Unity Church of Omaha.
  • Coordinating special family and youth activities, seasonal programs, outreach projects for youth and parent education offerings. Maintain an annual calendar for all events, schedule facility needs through the church office and maintain communications with minister(s) and congregation as needed.
  • Maintaining Youth and Family portion of the Unity Church of Omaha website, providing current event and curriculum information and collaborating with the web site manager in development.
  • Providing regular reports to the General Church Circle noting attendance, program information and planning. The Director should be available to attend Board meetings quarterly or as requested.

 

Qualifications:

1. Prefer a BS or BA degree with at least two years experience in youth education.

2. At least one year of experience organizing and supervising adults as employees or volunteers.

3. Prefer Licensed Unity Teacher, Minister or at least two years of membership in a Unity Church with completion of or a commitment to 40 hours of SEE or similar coursework.

4. Demonstrated commitment to personal spiritual growth and the mission and vision of the Unity Church of Omaha. 

5. Desire to nurture the spiritual growth of children of all ages and the adults who work with them.

6.  Strong oral and written communications skills; with the ability to communicate effectively with both adults and children. 

Time Requirements:

  • Thirty hour per week position with Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. required.
  • May schedule one Sunday off every other month.
  • May arrange the remainder of hours as desired with a minimum of sixteen hours per week scheduled at church location during weekday business hours, including all staff meetings and training.

 

Compensation and benefits:

  • Salary range is $20,000 to $24,000 annually paid bi-monthly
  • Hours = 30 per week, flexible
  • Vacation: one week per year
  • Paid holidays: Nine per year
